Terrarium gardening is a popular form of growing plants indoors. Many of them can take the form of miniature gardens, and can be as simple or complex as you like.
Some of the conditions of terrarium gardens are high humidity, warm, and sometimes lower light levels. With this in mind, it’s important to choose plants for a terrarium garden that can grow well under these conditions.
It would be a mistake to assume succulents grow well in a terrarium. Some may think to choose succulents because they can be small and they do like warmth. However, succulents do best under dry conditions and want maximum airflow – the opposite of what a terrarium would provide. Try to stay away from using succulents or air plants in a terrarium garden.
So what are some plants that do love the warm humidity of a terrarium garden?
A couple great choices would be mosses, lichens, and ferns!
Mosses have the additional advantage of being small. There are plenty of small fern species as well. However, choosing slow-growing plants that can be pruned also works. Below are a list of some plants that grow well in a terrarium.
Mini Ferns
- Lemon button fern
- Fluffy ruffles fern
- Eyelash fern

Mosses & Lichens
